Ballet Virginia International Spring Recital

Here are a few informal shots I took during my daughter's spring recital through Ballet Virginia International earlier this month. The performance took place at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts. BVI is an incredible organization with some truly amazing young talent!
I've posted more pictures on my Facebook business page, here. It was fun to experiment a little bit in this kind of venue, which is a little different from the weddings and portraits I typically do. Let me know what you think!

The 2010 Miss Virginia Pageant is about here, with preliminary competitions starting on the 24th and the 25th.

This year is special though because Lacey Lichi Photography has already photographed the winner...

Well, not yet, but a few weeks back I had the chance to shoot some gorgeous photos of Meredith Brown, our pick (of course!) to win this year's pageant.

Meredith is Miss Hampton-Newport News for the 2009-2010 and is an extraordinarily talented young woman with a heart of gold.

Rachel's Bridal

Hello Everyone! I know it's been a while (again), but the good news is that I've been very busy shooting so I will have tons of photos to share with you! Hello to all of my Friends!

I can't believe that February is over already. It seems like the year and the semester just began last week.

I'll just skip the apologies for being away for so long. I will also skip the promises to post more often, though certainly I will do my best.

To all of my blogging friends: I hope you all are doing well--it's been so good to hear from some of you who have written. It's been so rewarding to hear of all your success and great experiences.

Time always passes more quickly when you're busy, and I've been so blessed with some fantastic photography opportunities. I could not be more excited about the brides I've been working with in the last month or so. So to Rachel, Amanda and Katie--you all are incredible! You are so beautiful; I cannot wait to be a part of your big days!

To the many families I've been working with--Tanya, Emily, Nicole and Travis--you are amazing! It's been a joy to capture you, your little ones, those just arrived, and those still to come (even if just your mommy's belly).

The joy of boys

A few weeks ago my oldest child woke up in the middle of the night and told us that he had put a bb in his ear. Sounds like a bad dream, right? Yeah, it has been, but it wasn't. A 6 hour, 5 doctor trip to the emergency room later and still a bb. After seeing the ENT in his office a few days later he told us that we would need to go into the O.R. to get it out. They needed him asleep and still because it was so close to his eardrum. SO, this last Friday- on my husband's birthday, Isaac headed into the hospital! He did great- mom and dad were a mess- but he did great! We are now bb free with no complications. I was some what amused at the fact that there was another little boy waiting with us that had rocks in his ear- Isaac found great comfort in the fact that he wasn't the only one silly enough to do something like that!

On a side note, I know that I am behind sharing my work so I thought this shot was appropriate for this topic! shot a group of brothers today that were an absolute blast! Here is a sneak peek for their mama! Thanks for letting me shoot your boys. You really are wonder woman to keep up! What an amazing family.

Election Day in Norfolk, Virginia

We voted this morning, with kids in tow. The line at 7:00 was 2.5 hrs. Worth every minute.

I took these on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago. Not a planned shoot we were just out playing. But I think that is why I like these. Outfits are not clean, neither are faces. Hair is not combed and I didn't ask for any smiles. This represents their attitudes almost perfectly. Isaac has been devouring any book we put in front of him- his mind never stops! We just cut Livi's hair and it is still just as crazy as ever but she is giggling and making us giggle. We had quite the round of sickness in the family and Caleb was looking pretty pathetic in this batch! He had SIX teeth come in all at once and ended up with a sinus infection so bad he had goop coming out of his eyes! Therefore, to save you from the green boogers- his sweet smile is in black and white. He is grinning like that because he was standing on the top of a slide. I still can't believe Isaac ended up in the ER before Caleb. (More on that in another post!) I turned around today and he was standing on top of a book shelf in my classroom grinning away. Motherhood is amazing and these three make it all worthwhile.

I was in charge of a bulletin board in the preschool hallway this month. It was supposed to have a "Christian Ed" theme. So I used the verse, "The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord". I knew that it NEEDED pictures so I shot some around the school and blew them up to 8 x 10. I then had a blast making a giant scrapbook page in the hall. Man, I miss scrapbooking! Maybe in another life and time! These were a few of the pictures I used- I'll try and get a picture of the finished product one of these days.

Is it bad that I had to stop and think about my password?! That means that I have obviously been away for too long! I was in bed tonight thinking about photography and life in general and knew that I needed to be back on here a bit more- (Mom, and Ivanna, quit giving me a hard time it is keeping me up at night!) Life has been good here- just extremely busy. I love this time of year. The weather is ideal and the holidays are just around the corner- I can feel the excitement in the air. I have been busy second shooting with (the fabulous) Charlie Gunter for almost 2 months now. I have learned SO much and have had a phenomenal time! Weddings are amazing. I get lost in the romance, excitement, and colors of the day. I have had fun with my camera learning to tell the story of each day. What an exciting journey. I've also had the privilege of shooting some amazing families. I'm excited to share some of those shots with you.

I'm going to try and blog every day this week. Beyond that, no promises. To all of my family that check in- yes, we're still alive. Yes, I love and miss you more than I can EVER say. And yes, there is still a BB stuck in Isaac's ear! My dear blog land friends- I can't wait to catch up on your lives.

Game night

We met up with some friends for a "Hurricane Hannah Party" a couple of weeks ago. The hurricane didn't touch us but we sure had a good time! Anthony and I remembered how much we enjoyed playing Scrabble and Phase 10. This last weekend we had the family over for a re-match. I'm trying to get my game a little better. Notice on the above board "repartee". That would be my husband. Womped us all with his double PhD! Used all of his letter tiles and placed it just right so that none of us had a chance! I'll get him one of these days!

Luckily, our kids get along fantastic and it actually allows us to have some adult time! Our little guys were even willing to share and play nice!

The 1st day of Preschool

Just like her big brother, Olivia headed off on a new adventure this year. This was her first time going to preschool! Last year she went to "MommyPreschool". I was a little worried about the 5 days a week but she LOVES it! She loves to carry her back pack and proudly displays the contents of her folder as soon as she sees me. She is quickly making new friends and blending in just great!

I have no excuses. No really good ones anyway! I finally sat down today and moved some files to external storage so that I could use my editing software without freezing the computer! For the last week, I'd upload and try to edit and get VERY frustrated. It just took some time and patience. It is working well for now.
We are into the routine of work and school. It has been busy but I think that we are all adjusting well. I love being in the classroom and my little 2's are precious! ALSO, I worked with the amazing and talented Charlie Gunter as an assistant/second shooter yesterday for an incredible wedding! I had so much fun. It is refreshing to find someone willing to share their knowledge and experience in the field. I am already looking forward to the next few weekends of weddings! Thanks Charlie and AnneMarie for having me on board!

The 1st day of First Grade

I officially have a First Grader! Isaac marched off to a new grade at a new school with nothing but excitement- and, of course, some new gear! It always makes my heart hurt just a little at his independence. But then in the same moment I swell with pride at what a wonderful boy he has become! This is our week of firsts. Olivia will go to preschool, other than mommy, tomorrow for the first time. Caleb and mommy will go on Thursday for the first time. I'll keep you updated with photos. It's like the Olympics, except we're not competing and there are no gold medals. Okay, it was a long shot. It is just busy and extremely exciting!

Is it really Friday?!

I can't believe that I haven't blogged all week! What a week it has been! I wanted to share a few very exciting pieces of news with my family and friends.

First, I am going to be second shooting/assisting a VERY talented local wedding photographer named Charlie Gunter- check out his website- http://www.charliegunterphotography.com. I won't be able to share images with you all, but I will be gaining amazing experience and can't wait to work alongside someone whose work I admire and who is a seasoned pro.

Second, as of yesterday, I am going to be teaching a 2 year old preschool class 2 days a week! I can't tell you how excited I am that this has worked out the way that it has. Beginning next Thursday I will officially be on staff at First Presbyterian Preschool! I have a lot of work to do in preparation but, as those of you who know me best know- this is the kind of work I LOVE! Olivia will be in the 5 day 4's class and Caleb will be in the 2 day 1's class. I love the schedule- 9-12. I am a little apprehensive about Caleb but it is SUCH a great program that I know that, in time, he will love it too!

On top of all of this crazy news- one of my best friends dropped in yesterday for a very fast visit! I took a few shots in between teacher meetings and meet and greets. I will try and get them posted for you but my computer is having some issues- I NEED MORE MEMORY! Things are running very slow! Have a very happy weekend. Keep shooting!

Happy Fourth Baby Girl

I'm feeling extremely emotional tonight so this may be short! My baby girl turned 4 today. It seems just like yesterday that we were holding this TINY little being in our arms for the first time. I can't tell you how excited I was to have a GIRL. There are the obvious reasons like painted fingernails and matching hairbows but I was more excited about the relationship we would have. I couldn't imagine life without being able to share the sort of relationship that I had with my mom with my daughter. I think that we are a lot alike which, at times, makes things rather difficult. Her daddy is so incredibly enamored with her that she can do little wrong! She has a strong will but a kind and appreciative spirit. She makes us ALL laugh and tends to be the ring leader in the house.

We had a carnival themed party back in Indiana about a month ago. She wanted to make sure that ALL of her friends would be able to help her celebrate.

Her morning started with a gift. A Grandma Carla gift that has been sitting prettily wrapped for over a week now. She has been eyeing it and begging but, being the mean mom that I am, I made her wait until today! She scored a new diaper bag for Bitty Baby, aka Gracie, and the little mommy couldn't be happier.

We took a friend of hers for the day and headed out to Jumpin Jellybeans. I didn't get great shots but figured that I'd share them anyhoo. They had a GREAT time and were SO tired by the end! We feel so blessed to have met such a good little friend for Livi so fast.

Tonight we had cake, played outside for a bit and opened her last presents. I'm embarrased to say that the gifts that I had ordered for her didn't arrive until she was actually IN BED. Thank you UPS for making us wait ALL DAY! I didn't have a chance to grab my camera for that set but I'll try to shoot some in the morn with all of her loot.

A very busy weekend

This weekend I got to see my college roomate and kindred twin Liz and her husband Dave. I hadn't seen them in SIX years and somehow it was as if no time had past. We could get into a lot of trouble together! (And did at one point in time!) We met them, along with her fabulous brother and his amazing wife, at the Virginia Living museum. It is another fantastic place here! It is a mix between an aquarium, a zoo, and a museum. We will definitely go back.

Caleb got REALLY sleepy and spent part of the time lounging in the stroller. I can't resist that sweet face! The turtle REALLY wanted to be photographed- so, I obliged.

I get very few "normal" shots of Isaac. He usually has his tongue out and is pulling some kind of stunt like a monkey. This shot was between silly faces and I just love it. He looks rather pleased with himself and the fish beside him is watching the whole show.

More flowers. I can't resist. Today we headed to the Virginia Zoo with a colleague of Anthony's and her family. More fun had by all! I should post some animal pictures but I am completely enamored with the flowers here- so that is what you're gettin'!

After dinner walk

I missed you yesterday! I wasn't home more than 10 minutes until bedtime. I spent the morning at a new friend's house followed by a long physical for Isaac that included an x-ray of his adnoids. I walked in the door and Anthony called and told me that there was a new faculty dinner on campus- so off we went again! I was exhausted last night! Today was uneventful, just trying to get things done around here. It's always that last 10% of the unpacking that is the hardest. After dinner we like to take walks. Lately we've been walking down to this great little video store-which will get a whole post of it's own another time! But tonight was beautiful and cool so we headed down to our neighborhood park. On the way I found these BEAUTIFUL flowers. They look just like wedding dresses to me. They were so incredibly delicate. I would have shot more but there were also LOTS of bees.

Here is a sneak peek at Caleb's new haircut. I might keep shooting it further away! I did a PRETTY good job. Just don't look too close.

Sorry I missed yesterday! I worked hard in the morning just getting stuff done and then we went over to explore campus a bit and visit daddy. I only snapped a few shots because I was trying to keep up with the ever moving Caleb. This campus is VERY different from IU. Much. . . newer and not nearly so sprawling. On the main lawn their are two very interesting little "groves" like the one below. I don't think that I've ever seen anything quite like it.

The kids were, of course, delighted to see a fountain. If you've been on my blog for a while you'll know that the fountains at IU were a favorite spot of ours. They like the lion here, there are paw prints all over campus and we talk about where this lion must go at night.

I am still amazed by the greenery here. SO BEAUTIFUL and plentiful. I feel like I see more at every turn!

I know that I am lacking in real substantial ODU shots. I will try, kid-less, another day. But today, alas, I was a mom first and just a photographer on the side.

This is a picture that I took on the 4th of July but hadn't shared because life was JUST TOO BUSY! There are a ton more but it is the weekend and I am going to go relax with the hubby. I have some exciting opportunities here in Norfolk that I will share soon. For now, I will just say God is good, and faithful even with the tiny details of life.

Nauticus

Last weekend, with my in-laws, we took in Nauticus- a maritime museum and the parking spot for the USS Wisconsin. I had a touch of the flu so I didn't shoot much but I was just going back through my photos and wanted to share a few so that you can get a sense of some of the things we are seeing here. Walking on to a battle ship is a little surreal. It gives you a whole new appreciation for the people that serve our country. The kids had a BLAST and are already asking to go back. I'm anxious to go back and really take it in with the energy that it deserves.

Bella Pizzeria

I feel like I'm one step closer to settling in to a place when I find a good pizza place. But we didn't just find a "good" pizza place, we found a FANTASTIC pizza place! The pizza at Bella Pizzeria is the closest thing that we have found to New York pizza. Perfection! For the locals- it is near Princess Anne on Colley right in Ghent. If you are in the neighborhood or just swinging through- it is worth a visit.

This is what Caleb looks like until he actually has the pizza IN his mouth. The owner and staff have always been very friendly and Caleb just runs around. They even bring me ice cubes for their delicious Italian Wedding soup so I can cool it down instantly for the eager mouths of my children!

Botanical Gardens

We took a trip back to the Botanical Gardens today and I must say that I have fallen in love with this place! From the beautiful grounds to the awesome kid's area, I can guarantee that we will be spending a LOT of time there.

On a side note-These pictures lost a bunch of color when I posted them here- it seems to be happening a lot lately. Is this happening to anyone else? And if so, how do I fix it? They look one way on my computer- much more vibrant and then when I post it takes them down a notch.

A memory to share

I know, I know, I said I was going to post about my hubby. But I decided that you all know how much I adore him and because he is in a new job I would spare him some of the embarrassment that would come from my gushing! I was thinking this morning about these pictures that I took last month and knew that I wanted to share them with you. This was one of our last weeks in Bloomington. We were with dear friends and the kids were completely absorbed in their artwork. Everyone was happy and even Caleb was staying still and just enjoying exploring the chalk. It was peaceful. Yes, there were 6 children but you could hear the sound of the chalk on the sidewalk as they worked. It was beautiful and I tried my best not to disturb them as I lay on the grass to get these shots! These are moments I miss. And the people I miss. We love you guys and are thinking of you always.

I will be brief tonight because it is our 8 year anniversary and I'm gonna spend it with my husband instead of my computer! I wanted to share some images of a sky that caught me a few nights ago. Wow, It has been a LONG TIME!

I really didn't mean to be gone this long. And I didn't realize how much I'd missed it until I opened this blank page. A lot has happened. I've been shooting along the way and I'll share parts of the journey! I have been living in Norfolk, Virginia for a little over 2 weeks now and I can finally sit at my computer without looking at nagging boxes waiting to be unpacked. I must say that this city is much more than I expected. I had fallen into a pretty big slump in the weeks before our move. I wasn't ready to leave Bloomington- it was comfortable, our friends were there. . . it was home. I got here with a pretty rotten attitude. I'm not sure that I even WANTED to like it. But I have undergone an attitude adjustment and we are settling in quite nicely here. There is just so much to do. We haven't even put a dent in it yet! My husband has joined me here finally and life just might get back to normal. A new normal anyway. It is quite different than Bloomington which makes it almost easier- there is just no comparison! I will miss, quite desperately, the friends I left behind and to that I can only say, "THANK GOD FOR THE TELEPHONE!". Mama Mia wasn't the same without my girls.

I have a lot to catch up on with my fellow bloggers- you guys have been BUSY! I've been around a little and am already enjoying what I see! I'll be by to comment soon. I just finished editing a shoot that I shot the day before we moved. So I'll post those first. I may be back tonight with a few more from the area- just for my mom!

To all of my loyal friends and family, I'm still alive. Barely. Life is VERY busy here in Indiana and unfortunately blogging has had to go by the wayside for awhile. For the summer, before the move, I'll post as much as I possibly can but it will most likely not be every day. I miss all of your correspondence and look forward to getting back to my normal routine.

Baby blues. Everyone who knows me knows that I LOVE shooting people. I know that this is pushing it with project blue but enlarge the picture and just take a look at those eyes! This was my day. Filled with smiles and lots and lots of water. After we played in this wonderful creek we had a HUGE storm. You know, the kind with rivers running down the street and thunder that shakes the house. I love storms, so I did enjoy it this evening but I'm so glad that it held off and just let us play with our friends!

I usually take a lot more time on these projects! Life is a little topsy turvy right now so I gave myself 2 minutes to shoot tonight. It rained ALL day. I had big plans with my little ones and instead we played inside and made bugs. The rain has stopped tonight and it is beautiful out. I just want to go walking! This is SO MUCH FUN!! It's nice to be shooting a color again! We walked over for some ice cream today and I was thrilled to see that a city employee got a little overzealous with the blue paint for a water pipe.

And I totally lucked out when I found a Boy's and Girl's club bus parked right next to the park we were playing at. Yes, blue IS a good color and it wants to be found!

The hard part of goodbye

These aren't my best photos ever but tonight it isn't about that. It's about reflection and friendship. Virginia is a good move for us; I have to keep telling myself that sometimes. Like today as my children played FOR HOURS with good friends of ours. Not good friends, best friends. They have been friends all of their lives and leaving will be really hard. And as hard as it may be for them, leaving their mama will be even harder on me. Bloomington has introduced me to some "kindred twins". Women that were meant to be part of my life forever. Some have already left this town and distance hasn't changed our friendship. It will be with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my friends here. Luckily, my phone has speed dial and I have the whole summer before that goodbye has to come.

1. We ARE moving to VIRGINIA!!! It's a long and complicated story. Bottom line is that it makes my husband look like this:

Isaac officially walked away from Kindergarten today. That means 2 things: IT'S SUMMER! and I HAVE A FIRST GRADER! It was a little sad. Even his teacher got a little choked up, and I of course, had my camera right there! This class of kids was pretty darn special. Just good kids. Our kindergarten experience was fantastic and I can only hope that Livi and Caleb have the same experience.

P.S. You'll notice that I didn't post pictures of my office. That's because my office won the little battle last night. (And I had a really great talk with both my brother and my best friend!) But all is not lost, I WILL WIN THE WAR!

Today I turn 29. My last year in my twenties. They have been very busy years for me and they will forever be very precious. I graduated from college with honors. I got married. I went to Hawaii, I lived in Oregon, Chicago, New York, and Indiana. I went to France. I traveled coast to coast- with 3 cats. I was a librarian at an all boys school, I taught at a toddler school, I had three babies. I ran a preschool, I sent my oldest to kindergarten, I saw my husband finish 2 masters and a double PhD, and I started a career in photography! These are just a few of the highlights!

Now, to the future. Before I turn 30 I want to: keep building my photography portfolio, start up a website and photo hosting site, second shoot with a professional wedding pro, teach my middle child to read, teach my youngest child to walk, teach my oldest to ride a bike with no training wheels, watch my husband get a job, get my office organized, scrapbook again, EXERCISE, and be better about staying in touch with friends and family. To my dear family and friends that read this- I expect you to keep me to it!

Today we went back to the fountains as a family and I grabbed a few more shots.

I walked the kids over to the university today to see the fountains. I didn't shoot much because Caleb REALLY liked the water and I had my hands full! I tried to grab a few pics of his hands in the water before he tried to dive in! During the summer they put on their suits and really play in the water. Today I just let them get their feet wet. They are SO ready for summer! If today was any indication, the pool will be quite interesting for the littlest.

I grabbed a few more shots on a walk to the grocery store tonight. This can has been there for about a week now and every time I have passed it I've wished for my camera. It is on the property of a brand new, not even opened, building and it seems so out of place.

I didn't post last night because I thought I was going to have a BIG announcement this morning. We got a call last night from Virgina saying that we would be getting a very important call from the dean in the morning. Questions were asked, we were/are certain that an offer was to follow. We had given up on Virginia but got excited again and told our friends and family. What a roller coaster! The dean called at 9 a.m. and asked for a little more time to straighten out some "technical difficulties". A little strange but we weren't too worried. Well, a call came at noon that the provost had put an end to the search and no one would be hired. How can they do this to us?! I don't even know what to say. I guess that I am glad that we are not joining an institution where there is so much turmoil. This has been going on since FEBRUARY! We are happy to be staying here and will do what we need to so that will be successful. We headed for a hike this afternoon to clear our heads and I thought about family and happiness . I have both and we will be okay.

After we picked Isaac up from school today we headed out to one of our little local lakes. The geese were especially friendly because my kids were throwing crackers in. (I swear that I didn't see the "don't feed the geese" sign until after our hike!) Despite the muddy conditions, we hiked up through the beautiful forest where Isaac ran the trails, Olivia- the fairy- danced her way along, and Caleb received a wonderful shoulder ride from his daddy. I can't wait to take a canoe out onto the water when the weather warms up a little.

Tonight when I went to shoot! I hadn't shot at all today because my hands were full! This afternoon we had rain and I officially had a sick baby. He was just snuggly and hot so I played full time mommy pillow. I headed out tonight to try and get some shots in but was only outside briefly before getting absolutely drenched. I wanted to stay out but I love my camera too much to put it through a rain storm! The last shot is driving home, at a light, I wanted to "rain" with my camera. There you go, camera rain by Lacey!

I woke up today and all I wanted to do was grab my camera and go shoot. It was a beautiful day and we finally decided to take a photo field trip to Nashville, Indiana. You really can't go wrong in Nashville. It is a charming little tourist town with great colors and textures- not to mention really nice people. My kids were somewhat cooperative, somewhat. . . as models. Caleb was very tired but cooperative in the sense that he willingly relaxed in his stroller. I even got brave enough to ask one of the "locals" if I could take his portrait! I can't even imagine the stories that are behind those eyes. Here you go, Nashville- through my lens.

Sorry I missed yesterday. I just didn't want to think about life for a little while and usually I can't do that while I'm blogging! I'm back and refreshed!
Olivia is in a new phase where all she wants to do is dance. More specifically, she wants to be a ballerina. Graceful, not quite, but her heart is there. She has been watching a dvd that she got from Grandpa Bob and Nana Cheryl for Christmas and she is trying to get all of the positions down. It is very sweet. Today she and her friend practiced for a bit. I can't get over how big she is getting. (Or how bruised her little legs are!)

Baby steps

Things are looking up, already. Virginia may be a no, but Indiana-at least for another year- is a yes. That window opened fast, didn't it?! We are still working out all of the details but things look pretty good.

I was watching Caleb today standing and thinking about taking those precious little steps and I was amazed again at how much faith he has in me. He takes a step and just DIVES towards me, knowing that, without fail, I will catch him. If only I had the faith of a child and was okay taking those baby steps all of the time. He hasn't ever let me fall so why I am so worried?

Happy mother's day to all of the moms in my life! You've made me who I am and I don't know what I'd do without you! Each of you have had an impact on my life an taught me how to be a mother and wife. Thank you. Now, if we could all live just a LITTLE closer life would be perfect. I miss you so much! I'm thinking a nice cruise and just the girls.

I celebrate this day for the 6th year. This is the best and only job that I ever truly wanted. Not many people would admit that. I've wanted to be a mommy from the time I could nurse my baby dolls. I remember in high school when people asked what I wanted to do with my life and all I wanted to say was, " I want to be a wife and a mother." Somehow it never seemed like that was a right answer. I was supposed to enter into some great career. I graduated from college with a degree and high marks but this is still what I wanted more than anything else in the world. I could do other things, and do them well, but I was just waiting until I entered this chapter. I live for this role. I find motherhood exhilarating, exciting, and yes, at times, exasperating. I am finding a nice balance between doing things for my kids and doing things just for me. But it is always as a mother that I enter the task at hand. Today, I celebrate my fabulous life as a mom!

Isaac's Science Lab Party

Too. . .tired. . .! I am absolutely beat, but very happy. We had a great party today! Throughout the party we had 8 science stations for the kids, (who numbered 18! with siblings) and boy did they experiment. I must admit that I was very proud of the cake. When Isaac told me what he wanted, I didn't think that I could pull it off. But, thankfully, it was extremely easy and I think that it was everything that Isaac had imagined. (He comes up with the ideas, I just have to make them happen!) Thanks to some great help from great friends everything went very well. Thanks guys!

My other little man

Part of moving on, which I hope we will do soon, is leaving people that I love very much. We do need to get a job and leave this wonderful town but I can't tell you how much of my heart will stay here forever. Matt started coming to my house for preschool almost 2 years ago. He is my third son. Serious, sweet, and very smart. And today was our last full day of preschool. He has some very exciting things in his future as I hope we do but I will miss him and his family very much. They were my first family photo shoot before I thought of photography as a career. He has been a model, and a PERFECT one for a long time now. Even today he kept saying, "Miss Lacey, take my picture!" and then would strike a pose. In honor of our very special last day we went to a place called "Bouncer Town" which is filled with huge bounce houses and slides. We had a blast! I can't think of a better way to say goodbye to this chapter. I love you Matt.

My Isaac turned six today. I'm having trouble writing that. I have a six year old. My how time has flown. I remember the joy of my first pregnancy, childbirth, and life with a newborn. He was perfect. Mellow, sweet, and utter perfection. Isaac means "blessed laughter". I couldn't have named him better. He was easy, a true blessing in our lives. As he grew, we fell more and more in love. He is tenderhearted and nice. I feel proud to be his mother. Isaac is growing into his own little person now and everyday becoming more and more independent. Although, I encourage and welcome this independence, it is with a heavy heart that I begin the letting go process of my first born son. I love you boo, I can't wait until your party on Saturday!!

Then, we tried out the trial volcano cake. It is pretty awesome! I'm going to wait until Saturday to reveal the full glory of the cake, but I will give you a preview of the effects! The kids had a great time playing with the dry ice.

While I was at my sister in law's wedding I shot a picture of her maid of honor and her boyfriend. She mentioned that they didn't have any good pictures together. Well, we can't have that now, CAN WE?! We marched outside and did a mini 5 minute or less shoot. These two are adorable. They are Denny Eugene and Jenny Jean. How cute is that? Lake Monroe

I am extremely behind here at home and am preparing for my son's birthday party this Saturday- so I apologize that I haven't visited any blogs. I'll be back soon, I promise!! Isaac had a day off today so we packed up our sand toys and headed for the lake. I was very confused when I got there because I couldn't find the beach. Finally, a park employee informed me that it is underwater! The kids were pretty disappointed until we found a road, now underwater, that they could play on.

I had to get a picture of Olivia's toe. Yesterday she dropped a brick on it. Yes, this IS the child who I recently pictured all banged up from a bike crash. It was a pretty messy affair. Praise God she is all right. They haven't x-rayed yet but she is walking on it and I think she is going to be okay.

I'm so tired! What a beautiful and fun wedding. I was so thankful to have the opportunity to see a wedding photographer in action! I don't even know where to begin. 1 year and 9 months ago we found out that baby number 3 was on the way. SURPRISE! We had decided that 2 was a good number, got rid of all of the baby and maternity things and were a happy little family. We didn't know that our family was missing a vital piece. The thought of doing it all again took a little getting used to but we started to get really excited. When we found out we were having a boy I felt like it was just meant to be. My oldest had the special first spot. My middle had the special only girl spot and along came the last and the baby spot. He arrived 3 weeks early, much to the dismay of my mom who really wanted to be here! His siblings adored him immediately and we can't imagine life without him. Yes, it is crazy sometimes. But I wouldn't trade it for the world. I love watching them interact and learn from each other. Sibling lessons, things I can't teach. I've watched Isaac become mature and responsible. Livi is the perfect little mommy to her brother. Caleb is a gem. He seems like so much more of a baby than my other 2 at this age. I think it is because I am letting him really live that role! He is slowly gaining that independence that is sure to come but I must say that I am absolutely loving having a baby! Slow down. Stay little forever. Happy Birthday little Sugar Bean!

This morning we just played. He got some new toys at his party yesterday and had a lot of fun trying them out today.

With the passing of the year comes the flipping of the car seat! He is sleepily watching for his big brother out the window. He kept looking at me-quite amazed that now he can really watch me drive.

We went to an Italian restaurant for a family dinner and Caleb wanted nothing to do with opening presents. His siblings were happy to help him out.

The spaghetti, however, was a HUGE hit!

Man, oh man, did he want that cake! We had special cupcakes yesterday, so today I just bought a small cake. He recognized that sugar right away and couldn't wait to get it in this mouth!

This is my competition. Daddy always has the video camera in hand and I am always hollering-"Did you get that on the camera too?!"

Favorite family tradition. Naked time before the bath. He loves to watch his brother and sister run around and be silly. He can almost keep up!

Project Green- Take 6

I had to finish the project as I started it- right out my front door. However, when i started these little plants were just starting to grow and now they're HUGE!

Today we had my son's first birthday party. It was supposed to be a play date in the park. But as you'll see from the pictures above, the weather had different plans for us. I hate to admit that the pics I took of the party today are not very good. It was dark and dreary inside and I didn't put on my flash. Plus, I was playing mommy and hostess and I just didn't shoot very many to begin with. Shame on me! His actual birthday is tomorrow and I will dedicate the entire day to him. (Makes me a little weepy just to think of my last baby turning 1!)

I haven't forgotten about the project! I just had a little business to attend to. I was delighted to find this green construction truck on the same lot that my yellow trucks were on. The lighting today wasn't nearly as good but I'll take it. There was also an abandoned shopping cart with this lovely green seat belt! I was sure today that I was going to get in trouble for trespassing. The lot I was on is in a new subdivision and there were plenty of people about today. Luckily, the only trouble I encountered was the red dirt in my shoes!

My favorites

I promised to post this morning but we had a birthday party and a busy day planned. I thought and thought about my favorite images. The first image I ever fell in love with is the image of the french couple kissing. It is photo journalistic in approach. It is a private moment beautifully captured.

There are plenty of images that left an impression although not a settling one. I won't post them here because they are disturbing. The little girl running away from the napalm, a man with a gun to his head, an aborted baby. These tell stories of terror beyond anything I have ever known. I am glad, I suppose, that someone took them and shared them with the world for education. However, they don't go down in my book as favorites. That is why I'm not a photo journalist covering world news.

I do gravitate toward people but not in that fashion. I'm a romantic, and a mother. Therefore, my favorite images from my life have very little to do with technical no how and everything to do with how they make me feel. I've posted this one before but I'll post it again because it is an all time favorite. (For more about why- look back to "Capturing the past")

I have several that I've taken of my children that I'm absolutely in love with but my scanner isn't working and I'm limited to what I have on digital file. From those, I think, this takes the cake.

My favorites are always changing and most have been posted here for all to see. I'll keep striving to capture real moments in an artistic way. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to more responses!

Okay, I'll admit it. I wasn't really thinking too much about the project today. I was busy capturing a little baby. (I'll post those next!) But my camera must have known that I needed a little green and found it anyway! Yes, it reached 80 today and the squirt guns came out! Luckily, we had a green squirt gun.

I have a confession to make. . . I almost just used the photo below. I took it a while back of a passing train. I hadn't shot today. I also had a shot of one of the graffiti walls below but I wasn't happy with it. I had cut out part of the word "lazy". Then it hit me, I was being lazy. I promised a shot a day and here I was cheating myself out of valuable camera "me" time. I headed out hoping to catch the last of the sun to re-shoot the lazy wall. I found some more graffiti on the way home and pulled over to shoot catching the last of the sun. I'll try not to cheat anymore!

P.S. Thanks for asking about little Liv and the bike crash. Other than the bumps and bruises she is back to normal! I have a feeling that our first hospital trip will be with that child. She just isn't what you would call cautious!

My preschoolers were actually ASKING me to shoot them today! Being the wonderful teacher that I am, I obliged!

I've got to label this next set good or in the future I'll swear that it's 4th of July. Our day ended today with a picnic with some wonderful friends.

I didn't realize that I am solar powered until the sun came back out this spring. I just can't get enough! My mood is better, my whole outlook on life is better! Of course, be cautious and lather on the sunscreen , but ENJOY! Two guesses as to where these were shot. I promise that tomorrow I will find a different location!

Yes, I realize that he is a baby and I shouldn't be giving him suckers. BUT if his hands were busy, he would leave his hat on and that kept his hands busy for a LONG time!

Daddy is in Virginia for a job interview. I promised to video our last swim lesson of the season. Problem is, I didn't take the video camera! Here are some shots to hold you over honey- I took a TON more. If you watch them in a real fast slide show, you will see them swim- I SWEAR!

Sorry the shots of Isaac are a little shaky. I was shaking. Watching my son jump from something that high, into that deep of water, with no one down there, on his own, did something to me!

Let me introduce you to my preschool bike gang. They're a rough bunch, let me tell you!

We were at the park and I looked over at my friend and noticed that even while her sweet baby was sound asleep he was still holding on. I think that baby hands are one of the best things on the planet.

We ended our day at the fountain at IU. Caleb was absolutely mesmerized by it. When the wind would change direction he would get quite the spray of water- which he thought was a lot of fun!

It is called "Project Looking Through" and you are supposed to have the sensation of looking through something. I thought about it all day and these are my take on the theme. My world is really pretty small right now! We were back at our park today lovin the sunshine. Isaac's bus was parked right in front of me and I couldn't help but think of project yellow! I've wanted to incorporate more people into the project and Livi playing on the pole fit the bill. I've always been much more drawn to people than to things but I must say that this project has helped me look at things a little different. There is a plethora of personality in many objects! (Especially yellow ones!)

I'm seeing yellow everywhere now! These are at the park today. And yes, the park definitely needs a makeover! But it is our park and we love it. There is something so old and sweet about it. And because it is less than fancy, it is rarely busy.

Sweet sweet magnolias

One of my favorite parts of spring are the magnolias. Our neighbor has a gorgeous tree that my camera has been asking to shoot. They are so elegant and regal. I can just imagine tiny fairies inside of them.

The last thing that caught my attention was how many petals were on the ground! So sad. Spring is so beautiful but so short!
